Food and Wine Tours in Madrid

Madrid was a natural choice for our first food and wine tour in Spain. Madrileños are famously confident in the superiority of their city and ensure that the finest of Spain’s produce finds its way to Madrid’s myriad restaurants and bars before anywhere else. Eating and drinking out is at the centre of daily life in the city, and not a day goes by without at least one quick stop for a caña (small beer) and tapa. On our insider gourmet tour of the ultimate dining-out city you’ll discover the origins of the very best jamón and the rising stars of Spanish wine, grown right on the doorstep of the capital itself…

Food, wine and culture in Spain

The Iberian Peninsula is an ancient land with a rich history, from prehistoric cave dwellers through Islamic conquests and Imperial rule, to Franco’s dictatorship. Spain has been home to Celts, Romans, Goths, and Moors, and all have left their mark, creating a dynamic culture against a backdrop of landscape that spans both snow capped mountains and arid deserts. This cultural and geographical variety means that the gastronomy of Spain varies immensely from region to region. However, there’s very much a distinctive character in the attitude of the Spaniards themselves. Meals are still very much a more-the-merrier affair for family and friends, they last for hours, start in the middle of the afternoon or late at night, and are always followed by a siesta, and often preceded by copious amounts of beer and tapas. Tradition is part of everyday life in Spain, and the food and drink reflects the wealth of history and cultures that have merged to form this fascinating country.

We’ll show you how to do a Tapas run like a Madrileño via the tables of Iberico pig farmers, winemakers celebrating indigenous grape varieties and chefs who cook to the haunting sounds of a Flamenco lament…
